Habitat

Screen the approach, not just the stand

A hidden stand still fails if the walk to it is in the open. Cover has to start at the truck.

Hunters spend a lot of time brushing in a stand and very little time hiding the quarter mile before it. Deer pattern the walk, not the seat. If they see you on the ridge, the blind does not matter.

Cover the whole route

Look at the entry in the worst month you hunt, not in July when everything is green. Identify the open stretch, the skylined fence crossing and the last fifty yards. Those are the places screening, hinge cuts or a relocated path actually change the hunt.

  • Use existing timber and terrain before you plant a screen.
  • Keep the screened route off the food and off the bed.
  • Check it from the deer’s side, not from the parking spot.

The goal is not a hidden seat. The goal is a hunt the deer never knew happened.
