Habitat

Read the movement before you change the ground

Deer already have a pattern. The best improvements reinforce a useful one or solve a clear problem.

Habitat work goes wrong when it starts with a project list instead of a movement map. Trails, beds, edges and pressure already tell you how the property is being used. Ignore that and you can spend a year building something the deer walk around.

What to look for

Walk it more than once, in different wind and at different times of year. A trail that is hot in October may be a summer commute. A bedding thicket that looks perfect may only be used when the neighbor is hunting the other side.

  • Where deer enter and leave the property.
  • Which edges they travel when the wind is wrong for your best stand.
  • Where pressure from roads, houses or other hunters pushes them.

Then decide what to touch

Improve the pinch, the screen or the destination that already fits the pattern. A new plot in a dead corner does not create deer. It only matters if it connects to how they already move.
